The two mile long narrow
gauge Chalke Valley Railway was built to provide transport for a mine at Mead
End. The railway follows a southern tributary of the Ebble from a junction with
the
Ebble Valley Railway at Broad Chalke to Bowerchalke. The mine works a
stratum of hard chalk marketed as marble and suitable for carving with aggregate
as a by-product. A few years after opening to the mine the Chalke Valley Railway
was extended from Mead End to Bowerchalke and passengers, parcels, and general
goods traffic services commenced.
